Building School and Classroom Culture Course

Lesson 1 Setting up the physical environment
In this ‘lesson’ there are prompts and ideas to support you to think about setting up the classroom environment, building independence through resource access, classroom display areas and seating plan systems. You will be challenged to think about how you already do these things, and the degree of student ownership you facilitate and whether learning is at the centre of the process.
Lesson 2 Setting up the learning behaviours and expectations
Building a classroom community, a ‘community of learners’, is a key to creating safe conditions so that challenge and rigour can be effective learning prompts. Ensuring that students feel safe in the learning environment is critical for effective learning. Across many research disciplines, including neuroscience, this need has become crystal clear.
Lesson 10 Setting Up Peer Mediation
Peer mediation has the benefit of engaging students in the management of the school culture; focusing on perspective taking and shared problem solving, as well as building the overall skill level for managing conflict and disagreement in the school. Friendly Desk was one approach.
